Tim Bassett
Tim Bassett has been working with glass since 1994 and has studied with some of Australia’s leading glassblowers. He has also undertaken intensive courses in specialised techniques both in Australia and overseas.
His work is in private collections in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, USA and UK, as well as the collection of Dr Norris Ioannou, author of several books on contemporary glass and ceramics.
The Australian National Art Glass Collection, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, NSW acquired Tim’s work for their collection in 2007 and again in 2009.
Tim has been the recipient of an Ian Potter Cultural Trust grant and has been short listed for the prestigious Ranamok Prize for Contemporary Glass.
He has called his current body of work ‘Contemporary Chandeliers’ when they could more accurately be called illuminated contemporary sculptures. The work ranges from sublime, satin-like glass to explosions of coloured glass in large-scale installations.
Tim draws Inspiration from many areas, most recently, 1960’s sci-fi films, pop culture and politics. The synergy between light and glass is skilfully manipulated to make the most of this medium.
Tim pieces, whilst predominantly glass, incorporate various materials such as steel, inert gasses, electrodes, and L.E.D.’s. Each piece consists of numerous components including blown glass, solid formed glass, slumped glass and glass tubing.
His pieces have the opportunity to make the space in which they are installed more engaging and complete. Tim prefers to make individual, site-specific works made to his clients requirements.
